Title: Study of clinical profile, etiological profile and outcome in patients with meningitis or encephalitis

Abstract

Abstract
Each year, bacterial meningitis affects about 1.2 million people worldwide.  Accurate and early diagnosis is must as treatment delays are related with increased mortality and morbidity.  The present study is conducted to study the clinical profile, etiological profile and outcome in patients admitted with Meningitis and encephalitis or meningoencephalitis in all age group patients in tertiary care Centre of central India.

Aim and Objectives
1. To study the etiological profile of patients admitted with meningitis and encephalitis or meningoencephalitis. 
2. To study the clinical profile of patients admitted with meningitis and encephalitis or meningoencephalitis. 
3. To compare the clinical differences and outcome in different etiological causes.
 
It is a Hospital based, observational ambispective study done in admitted patients in department of neurology, medicine and pediatrics, AIIMS, Bhopal.

Inclusion criteria:
1.      Age: All age groups
2.      Patients with clinical features suggestive of meningitis and encephalitis or meningoencephalitis.
Exclusion criteria:
1.      Altered sensorium due to hepatic and uremic encephalopathy
2.      History of active malignancy and/or metastasis
3.      Not willing to provide informed consent.
4.      Incomplete hospital records.
 
The study was based on prospective collection of data of patients, admitted at department of neurology, pediatrics and medicine, AIIMS Bhopal

Results
Total  301 patients  were studied . Demogaphic details were noted. Clinical profile studied were unique in some subjects. Seizures of different types were noted and varied EEG findings were observed. The etiological profile, the CSF analysis results, electrophysiological, neuroradiological findings were assessed. Immune panel and paraneoplastic panel were assessed in some patients. We also checked association of etiology groups and Barthel Index scores (p<0.001.  In conclusion, our study provides valuable insights into the various aspects of patients with meningitis and encephalitis.

Priyanka V Kashyap has completed DM Neurology, DNBE Neurology, Fellow epilepsy from GBPMER, New Delhi, India. She is the Associate Professor & Faculty Incharge of The Department of Neurology, AIIMS Bhopal. She has over 26 publications including international, national. She is a peer reviewer for neurology journals including Annals of Neurology. Her interest is in epilepsy, headache and muscle disorders.
