The impact of internal conflicts on the mental health of populations in sub-Saharan African countries
Abstract
The objective of this research is to analyse the effects of internal conflicts on the mental health of populations in 21 sub-Saharan African countries over the period 2002-2021. Using the two-stage least squares (2SLS), the results show that when internal conflicts increase by one percentage point, the proportion of people with mental health disorders increases by 0.279 percentage points. It is therefore necessary to encourage policies aimed at the care and social reintegration of victims of internal conflicts, with a special focus on vulnerable people such as children, mothers, and people with physical and mental disabilities.
