Presentation Title:

Comparative study of caregiver burden among the caregivers of psychosis and mood disorder patients attending a rural tertiary teaching hospital

Abstract

Introduction: According to Global Burden of Disease 2017, 310 million people are suffering from mood disorders and 20 million from schizophrenia. Family is an integral part of care system for people with mental illness. The caregivers provide for the people with mental illness. Looking after their physical and financial needs leads to considerable caregiver burden. The present study is aimed to evaluate and compare the burden among the caregivers of psychosis and mood disorder patients in a rural setting.

Methodology: This was a comparative cross-sectional study done on 60 caregivers of psychosis patients and 62 caregivers of mood disorder patients, who are Caregivers above 18 years of age and providing care for the patients for at least 1 year were included. Caregivers of patients with schizoaffective disorder were excluded. Burden Assessment Schedule (BAS) was used to assess the caregiver burden.

Results: Both groups matched on socio-demographic variables like age, education, occupation, socio-economic status and type of family. The burden perceived by the caregivers of psychosis patients (BAS = 66.65 ± 25.28) was significantly higher (p=0.0001) than the burden perceived by the caregivers of mood disorder patients (BAS = 50.58 ± 18.58). Burden experienced by majority of caregivers of mood disorder patients (62.9%) was mild compared to caregivers of psychosis patients who experienced moderate to severe burden (63.3%).

Conclusion: This study has revealed considerably higher burden among the caregivers of the psychosis patients compared to the caregivers of the mood disorder patients. The findings support the requirement of identification of the burden in the caregivers of the patients, so that they are not adversely affected by it.
