Presentation Title:

The questionnaire for the assessment and understanding of violence in intimate relationships: Neuropsychological foundations of diagnosis and psychotherapy

Abstract

The presentation introduces the Questionnaire for Experiencing and Using Violence in Intimate Relationships (KPDiSP; Dyjakon & Rajba, 2024) as a diagnostic tool for therapeutic practice. It also outlines the program and process of individual psychotherapy that is based on neuropsychology and psychopathology.

The first section offers an overview of the issues faced by individuals who both experience and perpetrate violence in intimate relationships, highlighting the neuropsychological and psychopathological aspects of individual functioning.

The next section identifies specific and significant areas addressed in the psychotherapy of individuals involved in violence within intimate relationships. These areas are derived from established standards in psychological support for this field.

A brief case study illustrates the therapeutic process and demonstrates the changes in harmful behaviors of both victims and perpetrators who participate in therapy.

This form of psychotherapy is framed within an integrative approach, which incorporates elements of coherence therapy. This approach conceptualizes individual mental difficulties as crucial for understanding domestic violence, while also recognizing environmental factors that contribute to violent behavior.

The goal of psychotherapy, as understood in this context, is to enhance the awareness of individuals who experience and use violence about their personal functioning and the impact of these experiences on their mental health, as well as that of their significant others. Additionally, the aim is to modify behaviors that pose a threat to themselves and their family members.
