Evaluation of Child Development Centre (CDC) based intervention for children with multiple disability

Abstract

Background: Children with multiple disabilities usually have more than one significant disability that may include: speech, physical mobility, learning, mental retardation, visual, hearing, and possibly others. The greater the severity or impact on an individual, there is a greater likelihood for increased need for supports. Child development centre, Dhaka Shishu Hospital provide services for the children with multiple disabilities by arranging special clinics. 

Objective: To evaluate the types of multiple disability in children with cerebral palsy and epilepsy and their fate after intervention.

Methodology: 540 children with multiple disability referred to child development centre of Dhaka Shishu Hospital was assessed for impairments and appropriate intervention done in special clinics. 72 children came in regular follow-up and their improvement assessed from the record.

Result: Out of 540 children 357(66%) were male. 234 (43%) children were from age group 12-23 months and second highest 138 (26%) from the age group 24-35 months. On the diagnostic point of view most of the children 315 (58%) had Tetraplegic CP with Epilepsy and the second highest group was Diplegic CP with Epilepsy 75 (14%). Among 72 selected children who came in regular follow-up, initial assessment shows that motor disability present in all 72 (100%) children. cognitive delay in 36(50%), speech disability in57 (79%), feeding difficulty in 48 (67%), vision impairment in 42 (58%) and hearing deficit in 39 (54%). Out of 72 children 66 (92%) improved in motor function, 27 (38%) improved in cognitive function, 36 (50%) improved in speech, 30 (43%) improved in feeding, 24 (33%) improved in vision and 24 (33%) improved in hearing.

Conclusion: Children with a multiple disability require ongoing, extensive support in more than one major life activity in specialized clinic in order to improve their quality of life.
