Play therapy model proposal according to positive and intercultural psychotherapy

Abstract

Most children who do not have broad verbal abilities and complex thoughts like adults, express themselves through play and regulate possible emotions such as anger, fear, and shame by playing games. Perceiving the child's world through play is important not only for therapists but also for parents. The aim of this study, which includes a case report and with the integration of Positive and Intercultural Psychotherapy (Peseschkian, N., 1968) to play therapy, was to strengthen unity, love, patience and trust between family members and support them in acquiring effective parenting skills. For this aim, a method including the philosophy, principles, content and methodology of Positive and Intercultural Psychotherapy have been adapted to play therapy was employed, and parents (12 male and 12 female) and their children were included in the progressive play environment and allowed to interact through modelling. As a result, It has been observed that parents are more effective in coping with the challenges they face and adapt to each other in a relationship based on personal development after parent and child therapy sessions are completed. Overall, the study confirms that such a model can be used for empowering similar studies of field workers.

Biography

Mine Soysal, a Clinical Psychologist, graduated from AAB College with a BA in Psychology. She also graduated with honors from Pamukkale University, Department of Art Education. She completed her MA in Clinical Psychology at Near East University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences. During her undergraduate and specialized education, she completed her internships as a psychologist at Istanbul Ibni Sina Hospital, Denizli Courthouse Family and Children's Court, and Servergazi Hospital. She is an active member of the World Association for Positive and Transcultural Psychotherapy (WAPP). She is currently continuing her advanced (master's) education in Positive and Transcultural Psychotherapy. She completed her Sexual Therapy training from the Sexual Health Institute Association. She received training in EMDR. She also received training in Play Therapy and Child Testing from the Turkish Health Foundation. She completed the ICF accredited International Executive and Corporate Coaching Training in February 2024.
