Abstract
This article explores the intricate journey of caregiving amid the complexities of rare cancer, emphasizing the transformative impact on individuals and family dynamics. Told through the lens of the author—a doctor, psychiatrist, and current psychoanalyst in training, as well as a sibling and caregiver—it explores the investigative, treatment, and acceptance phases. This narrative serves as a case study, reflecting the author's personal journey through the complexities of caregiving in the context of rare cancer. Highlighting the importance of grief processing and honoring the autonomy of the sick, the article explores the underlying reasons behind the caregiver's desire for control. Advocating for selfcare as a significant factor, it provides a list of practical strategies and closes by underlining the step-by-step process of acceptance. It underscores the diverse journey of caregiver navigating rare cancer, weaving together life's complexities with resilience, love, and the enduring power of the human spirit.
Biography
Christine Rio Bistis-Nadala, MD, PhD, MPM is a newly appointed faculty member at the Greater Kansas City Psychoanalytic Institute and a pioneering member of its Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity. Her academic journey includes studies at Harvard, which have further enriched her expertise in psychoanalysis and mental health. She has held several significant roles throughout her career, including faculty adviser at the Development Academy of the Philippines, invitational professorial lecturer at West Visayas State University (WVSU) College of Medicine, and Chief Resident in Psychiatry at West Visayas State University Medical Center. She was honored with the WVSU Presidential Award in 2018 and recognized as the Most Innovative Doctor to the Barrios in the Philippines in 2013 by the Department of Health Philippines for pioneering a community mental health program across Western Visayas. Her international influence is evident through lectures on mental health, psychoanalysis and research delivered in Vietnam, Thailand, and at global platforms like the Philippine Psychiatric Association and the American Psychoanalytic Association. She is committed to advancing mental health awareness and integrating psychoanalytic concepts into medical education worldwide.
